Rice is one of the main cereals for more than half of world population. 90% of total white rice is produced and consumed in Asia. Totally, rice production is about 500 million tons in the world that only 6-7% are in trade (importing and exporting) circle. In Iran, after wheat, rice is the main food of more than 70% rice growing areas near the Caspian Sea in Iran.
Mazandaran province is one of the main rice growing areas in Iran. Approximately, 45% (about 1 million ton) of white rice in Iran is produced in Mazandaran. Tarom is the most cultivated variety among other varieties in rice production. This variety is so well-known in Iran and also in the world.
International Trade Center and Terminal Exports of Iranian Rice (ICR)
This center has been established by cooperating and investing of private section in the 17th kilometers in Amol, Mazandaran Province.
Main objectives of this center are as follows:
۱) To organize production, distribution and market this product to other areas over the world.
۲) To support and consult for exporting high quality rice.
۳) To apply new technologies for rice production and marketing.
۴) Possibility of exporting rice with the highest quality.
۵) To produce safe and high quality rice with training and educating farmers.
۶) To codex Iranian rice varieties.
۱) To use automatic facilities and new technologies for sorting and packaging rice in different sizes.
۲) To present different services for improving rice quality such as quality control, lab analysis, cooking quality, and weight analysis.
۳) Possibility of supplying about 400 thousand tons of high quality rice (Tarom) for exporting during the year.
۴) To access necessary facilities for temporary storage and transporting exported goods.
۵) Possibility of buying, selling and exchanging via electronic system.
۶) To establish relevant export organizations such as transportation, insurance, storage and marketing.
۷) Possibility of transporting via sea or air. (Seaport or airport).
۸) To establish the trade center for Middle East and central Asia.
Tarom is a local variety with the best cooking quality, aromatic and long grain. The length of this variety is about 7.3mm and its width is about 2mm with early maturity, which is categorized as a long grain. The amount of amylose is about 21%. Tarom is one of the best high cooking quality variety among other varieties.
It is a high yield and good cooking quality variety among other local and imported varieties in rice production. Fajr is a long grain (Length = 8 mm, Width = 1.9 mm) with semi-early maturity. It has 22% amylose. The cooking quality of Fajr is acceptable, and lower than Tarom; moreover, its price is less than Tarom.
